A homeowner took matters into their own hands Sunday morning, physically detaining a juvenile driver after a stolen SUV tore through a residential neighborhood, striking multiple vehicles and leaving a trail of destruction.
The chaotic sequence of events began at approximately 9:22 a.m. on November 9, 2025, when Maryland State Police and emergency personnel responded to reports of a multi-vehicle collision in the 21000 block of Spring Valley Drive.
According to the Maryland State Police Leonardtown Barrack, a 2008 Hyundai Santa Fe traveling southbound veered off the roadway and crossed a front yard. In a rampage partially captured on a neighbor’s Ring camera, the SUV smashed through a fence, struck a parked Ford Explorer and a Nissan Altima, and crashed through a second fence before finally coming to a halt.
Investigators confirmed the Hyundai was unregistered and verified as stolen by its last listed owner.
Four occupants—all juveniles or young adults—scrambled from the wreckage in an attempt to flee. While three passengers managed to escape on foot, the juvenile driver was intercepted by a quick-thinking homeowner who grabbed the suspect and held them at the scene until troopers arrived.
Due to the severity of the crash, emergency responders requested a medical helicopter for the driver. However, poor weather conditions grounded all aircraft. The juvenile was subsequently transported by ground ambulance to the UM Capital Region Medical Center for injuries sustained during the collision.
The search for the fleeing passengers concluded just 30 minutes later. At 9:52 a.m., authorities were dispatched to a second location at the 21700 block of Suwanne Place—less than a mile from the crash site—following reports of three individuals suffering from head injuries.
EMS crews located the outstanding passengers: an 18-year-old male, a 15-year-old, and a 14-year-old. The 18-year-old was evaluated at the scene, while at least one of the younger teens was transported to a local hospital for treatment of unspecified injuries.
The St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office assisted State Police in locating the suspects. Authorities stated that charges remain pending as the investigation into the theft and subsequent crash continues.
