A former FedEx delivery driver has been sentenced to death by lethal injection for the abduction and murder of a seven-year-old girl, in a case that has shocked communities across the United States.
Tanner Horner, 34, received the death penalty after pleading guilty to the 2022 killing of Athena Strand, a child who vanished from outside her home in Paradise, Texas. The sentencing followed an emotionally charged trial that revealed disturbing details about the crime and the child’s final moments.
Child Taken During Delivery
Athena Strand was reported missing after disappearing from the driveway of her father’s home while Horner was delivering a package. Prosecutors told the court that the driver abducted the child in broad daylight before taking her away in his delivery vehicle.
Her body was discovered two days later in a river miles from her home, sparking a massive investigation that quickly led authorities to Horner.

Horrifying Details Revealed in Court
During the trial, jurors were presented with harrowing evidence, including audio and video recordings from inside the delivery truck. The material captured the child’s final moments and played a significant role in the jury’s decision.
Prosecutors argued that Horner carried out a violent and prolonged attack, with evidence showing blunt force trauma, strangulation, and attempts to conceal the crime.
Horner initially claimed he accidentally struck the girl with his vehicle and acted out of panic. However, investigators said that version of events did not match the physical evidence presented in court.
Jury Reaches Swift Decision
After weeks of testimony, the jury took just a few hours to decide Horner’s fate, ultimately concluding he posed an ongoing threat to society.
Despite arguments from the defence citing mental health issues, including bipolar disorder and autism spectrum traits, jurors found no sufficient reason to spare him from the death penalty.
Emotional Courtroom Moments
The sentencing hearing included powerful statements from Athena’s family, who spoke about the devastating impact of her loss.
In one of the most emotional moments of the trial, a family member told Horner he would “face the wrath of God,” reflecting the anger and grief felt by those closest to the victim.
Horner reportedly showed little visible reaction as the sentence was delivered.
A Case That Gripped the Nation
The murder of Athena Strand drew widespread attention due to the circumstances surrounding her disappearance and the involvement of a delivery driver trusted to enter residential areas.
The case has since become a grim reminder of how quickly everyday situations can turn into unimaginable tragedy.
Horner now faces automatic appeals under Texas law, but the jury’s decision marks a significant step toward closure for a family left shattered by loss.
