A driver has died after a flatbed truck and a Toyota SUV collided on Windsor Road in Northmead, sparking a major emergency response and closing the busy road in both directions.

Emergency services were called to Windsor Road about 5.30am on Wednesday, June 24, following reports of a two-vehicle crash.

Officers from Parramatta Police Area Command arrived and found that a flatbed truck carrying portable toilets had collided with a Toyota SUV.

The impact trapped the SUV driver inside the vehicle.

The crash happened on Windsor Road between James Ruse Drive and Moxhams Road on Wednesday, June 24.

Images and accounts from the scene indicate a semi-trailer carrying what appear to be large concrete panels collided with a car before leaving the road and mounting the front lawn of a nearby property.

The truck came to a stop outside a heritage house that was reportedly undergoing restoration work.

SUV driver dies in hospital

Emergency crews worked to free the driver before NSW Ambulance paramedics transported them to Westmead Hospital in a serious condition.

Police later confirmed that the driver died in hospital.

Authorities have not yet formally identified the person, and police have not released their age or gender.

The truck driver, a 42-year-old man, received an assessment at the scene before being taken to Westmead Hospital for mandatory testing.

Mandatory testing commonly forms part of the investigative process following a fatal road crash and does not, by itself, indicate wrongdoing.

Windsor Road closed in both directions

Live Traffic NSW advised motorists that Windsor Road had closed in both directions between James Ruse Drive and Moxhams Road following the truck and car crash.

Drivers were warned to expect heavy traffic, allow additional travel time and follow the directions of emergency crews at the scene.

The closure affects a busy stretch of road connecting Northmead, North Parramatta and surrounding suburbs. Delays may also build on James Ruse Drive and nearby local roads as motorists attempt to avoid the scene.

Witnesses describe confronting crash scene

People posting in a Northmead community group described extensive damage at the site.

“Large semi with concrete panels has collided and veered off into front yard of the heritage house being repaired. Looks like a wreck,” local resident Jennifer Warren wrote.

Another community member, Serena Beck, described the scene as “terrible” and said the smaller vehicle appeared to have sustained severe damage.

Her account prompted fears about the occupants of the car. However, authorities had not publicly confirmed any deaths at the time of publication.

It remains unclear how many people were involved, whether anyone became trapped or what injuries may have occurred.

Cause of Northmead crash remains unknown

The circumstances leading to the collision have not yet been established.

Comments posted online included speculation about the road layout and whether one of the vehicles may have entered the wrong lane. There is currently no official evidence supporting those theories.

Police will likely examine the positions of the vehicles, road conditions, nearby cameras and any available dashcam footage as part of their investigation.

Motorists should avoid the area while emergency services, investigators and heavy-vehicle recovery crews remain at the scene.

This is a developing story and will be updated when NSW Police or emergency services release further information.

Police launch fatal crash investigation

Police have established a crime scene and begun an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the collision.

Investigators are expected to examine the vehicles, the position of the crash, road conditions and any available CCTV or dashcam footage.

Police will also prepare a report for the coroner.

Anyone who witnessed the crash or has relevant dashcam footage should contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

This article will be updated as further information becomes available.
