Shoppers at Macquarie Centre were left wondering what on earth had happened after police blocked off part of the food court following a reported incident.
The scene sparked plenty of talk online after a post appeared on Reddit’s r/sydney forum. The original poster said police had zoned off part of the Macquarie shopping centre food court and claimed they had heard someone had been stabbed.

But based on the comments from people who said they were there, the story is still far from clear.
At this stage, there does not appear to be a public NSW Police update confirming a stabbing linked to this specific incident.
Shoppers Saw Police and Ambulance Crews Arrive
Several people in the Reddit thread said they saw a large emergency response at the centre.
One user said they were sitting at a nearby restaurant when it all kicked off.
“We were as it kicked off as we sat at a restaurant. Didn’t see any actual incident. Six or seven police cars turned up and one ambulance,” they wrote.
They later added that they saw one person head to the ambulance without needing to be carried.
“About half an hour later I saw one victim walking unaided to the ambulance with his hand up to his face. They had a stretcher but didn’t need it.”
That comment made it sound like someone may have been hurt, but it did not confirm the stabbing rumour.
Another Person Said There Was No Blood
Another Reddit user said they were at the centre about 20 minutes after the incident.
“I was there about 20 minutes ago. The police were cordoning off the area. I didn’t see any evidence of a stabbing, and no blood anywhere,” they wrote.
That comment pushed back against the original rumour pretty quickly.
It also shows how messy these situations can get online. One person hears “stabbing”, another person sees police tape, and suddenly everyone is trying to work out what happened from tiny bits of information.
Humans of Eastwood Was Also Mentioned
The Humans of Eastwood page was also brought into the discussion.
One Reddit user shared what they said were comments from a post on the Humans of Eastwood Facebook page. According to that user, someone claiming to be a manager at the centre said security had confirmed there had been an altercation between two parties.
The same Reddit user said another comment claimed: “There was no knife involved.”
Those comments have not been independently verified by It’s About Crime, but they are worth including because they directly challenge the stabbing claim.
So, for now, the safest way to describe this is as a police response to an alleged altercation at Macquarie Centre. Anything beyond that is still unconfirmed.
Locals Reacted With Concern, Relief and a Bit of Reddit Humour
The thread had the usual mix of concern, second-hand updates and people trying to make sense of it all.
One user wrote: “Good to hear that he was walking unaided.”
Another said: “Still blocked off, everyone around the zone seems calm however.”
Others were more worried about where the rumour could lead.
One person wrote: “Damn I hate this knife / stabby culture.”
That reaction is understandable, especially after recent high-profile incidents in shopping centres and public places. But other users were quick to point out that the facts were still thin.
One commenter wrote: “Despite the extensive media coverage that tries to make it out like knife crime is a huge problem in Australia, it is not.”
Another added: “It’s easy to mistake a trend in news reporting as a trend in what the news are reporting on.”
And, because it is Reddit, there was also the odd joke thrown in.
One user wrote: “The toilet seat was stolen. Police are investigating but have nothing to go on.”
Not exactly helpful, but very Reddit.
Why the Rumour Spread So Fast
Macquarie Centre is a busy place. When police and paramedics turn up and start blocking off part of the food court, people notice.
The centre is also close to Macquarie University Metro Station and a major bus interchange, so the area gets a lot of foot traffic.
NSW Police has previously listed Macquarie University Metro Station, Macquarie Centre and Macquarie Centre Bus Interchange in material linked to knife-crime scanner operations.
That does not mean this incident involved a knife.
But it does explain why some people immediately jumped to that concern when they saw a heavy police presence.
No Cause For Concern
For now, this appears to be a local shopping centre incident that quickly turned into an online guessing game.
