A young driver has died in a devastating crash on one of Perth’s busiest roads, with confronting dashcam footage now revealing just how violent the impact was.
The incident unfolded on the Mitchell Freeway in Wembley on Sunday morning, shutting down a major stretch of road and triggering a large emergency response.
Terrifying Moments Caught on Camera
Dashcam footage captured the moment the crash occurred, showing a white Nissan Patrol suddenly veer out of control before slamming into a concrete barrier.
The force of the impact sent the vehicle airborne, flipping multiple times across the freeway in a violent sequence that stunned drivers nearby.
Despite the severity of the crash, the vehicle did not collide with any other cars, narrowly avoiding what could have been an even greater tragedy.
However, debris was scattered across the area, with one tyre reportedly flying off the vehicle and landing near a pedestrian path close to Lake Monger.
18-Year-Old Driver Dies After Crash
Police confirmed the driver was an 18-year-old man who was the sole occupant of the vehicle.
Emergency services rushed to the scene around 10:30am after reports that the car had lost control near the Powis Street exit while travelling northbound.
The teenager suffered critical injuries and was transported to Royal Perth Hospital, where he later died.
Major Crash investigators are now examining the circumstances surrounding the incident and have urged anyone with information or dashcam footage to come forward.
Freeway Shut Down for Hours
The crash caused major disruption across Perth’s road network, with northbound lanes of the Mitchell Freeway closed for several hours.
Traffic quickly backed up as motorists were forced to divert, with authorities warning drivers to avoid the area.
The freeway remained closed for around five hours while emergency crews cleared the wreckage and investigators examined the scene.
Second Fatal Crash in 24 Hours
The tragedy marked the second fatal crash in Perth within a single day.
Authorities confirmed a separate incident on Tonkin Highway the day before also resulted in a fatality, raising further concerns about road safety across the region.
Ongoing Investigation
Police are continuing to investigate what caused the driver to lose control, with speed, road conditions, and other factors all expected to be examined.
Anyone who witnessed the crash or has relevant footage is being asked to contact Crime Stoppers as part of the ongoing investigation.
