Rich Tourist Accused of Attacking Endangered Seal in Hawaii Sparks Fury After Saying “I’m Rich”

A tourist in Hawaii is facing massive backlash after allegedly throwing rocks at a critically endangered Hawaiian monk seal before reportedly bragging that he was “rich” and could pay any fine.

The disturbing incident happened near Lahaina on the island of Maui and quickly exploded online after witnesses shared footage of the confrontation. According to locals at the scene, the man allegedly hurled a large rock toward the seal while it swam near the shoreline.

Witness Kaylee Schnitzer, who filmed the incident, said the man appeared completely unfazed when beachgoers confronted him.

“We told him that we called the cops, and he was like, ‘I don’t care. Fine me, I’m rich,’” she told local media.

Endangered Seal at Centre of Viral Outrage

The seal involved in the incident is reportedly known locally as “Lani,” a beloved Hawaiian monk seal that has become symbolic to many Maui residents following the devastating Lahaina wildfires.

Hawaiian monk seals are among the rarest marine mammals in the world, with only around 1,400 to 1,600 believed to remain. The species is protected under both the Endangered Species Act and the Marine Mammal Protection Act. Harassing or harming one can result in severe penalties, including large fines and potential jail time.

Experts say even approaching these animals too closely can cause stress and disrupt important resting or feeding behaviours.

Tourist Detained as Investigation Continues

Authorities responded after witnesses reported the incident. According to reports, Maui police detained a 37-year-old tourist from Seattle matching the suspect’s description. However, no criminal charges had officially been laid at the time of reporting. The case has reportedly been referred to federal investigators.

The Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources condemned the alleged behaviour, while local officials described the incident as deeply upsetting for the community.

The footage sparked intense outrage online, with many social media users calling for harsh penalties if charges are filed.

Viral Video Leads to More Chaos

Another video circulating online allegedly showed a local resident confronting and physically attacking the tourist after learning about the seal incident. The clip spread rapidly across social media platforms and further intensified debate surrounding tourist behaviour in Hawaii.

While many online praised the local man for defending the seal, officials urged people not to take matters into their own hands.

The incident has also reignited broader discussions about overtourism in Hawaii and the growing frustration among locals over visitors disrespecting wildlife and sacred environments.

Why Hawaiian Monk Seals Are So Important

The Hawaiian monk seal is found only in Hawaii and is considered one of the most endangered seal species on Earth. Conservation groups have spent decades trying to rebuild the fragile population after years of hunting, habitat loss, fishing entanglements, and human interference.

Wildlife officials continue to remind visitors that these animals are protected by law and should never be approached, touched, fed, or disturbed.
