A 37-year-old woman in Brazil has been arrested after police say she pretended to be a 12-year-old girl for more than a year and deceived a family into taking her in.

The woman, identified in Brazilian reports as Amanda Maria Souza de Oliveira, allegedly used a false name and claimed she was a vulnerable child who had escaped abuse.

woman pretended to be 12

Authorities in Santa Catarina say she lived with a family in Joinville for around 14 months while presenting herself as a girl named “Gabriele”.

Police allege the family believed her story, cared for her, and even began taking steps toward formal adoption.

Police Say She Used A Fake Name And Childlike Behaviour

According to Santa Catarina Civil Police, the woman was arrested in the Pirabeiraba district of Joinville on suspicion of fraud and false identity.

Investigators allege she told people she was 12 years old and had no safe place to go.

Brazilian outlet CNN Brasil reported that the case began after she appeared at a church and claimed she had fled abuse by her biological father.

Members of the church community reportedly believed she needed protection. A pastor then introduced her to a family connected to the church.

That family took her in.

Police say she then lived in the home for more than a year while maintaining the false identity.

Authorities allege she used childlike behaviour to support the story. Reports say she used a pacifier, baby bottle and comfort objects. She also allegedly spoke in a younger voice and claimed she had medical conditions that affected her appearance and behaviour.

According to police, she also claimed she was autistic and said her adult features were the result of forced hormone use during childhood.

Family Reportedly Tried To Enrol Her In School

The family reportedly believed they were caring for a traumatised child.

CNN Brasil reported that relatives tried to enrol “Gabriele” in school and also considered starting a legal adoption process.

However, police say she resisted those steps.

She allegedly told the family that if they enrolled her in school or made the adoption official, her biological father would discover where she was and come after her.

That explanation reportedly delayed formal checks that may have exposed her real identity earlier.

For months, the family continued caring for her.

Reports say they provided food, shelter, emotional support and financial help. They also allegedly celebrated her birthday, believing she was still a child.

Suspicion Grew Inside The Family

The alleged deception began to unravel when a relative became suspicious.

According to CNN Brasil, an aunt connected to the family started questioning the woman’s story. At first, other family members reportedly struggled to believe they had been misled.

The family then searched online and allegedly found reports of similar cases involving the same woman in other parts of Brazil.

After that, they contacted authorities.

Police say investigators confirmed that the woman had allegedly used similar stories before.

Authorities Say She Had Similar Records In Other States

Santa Catarina Civil Police said the woman had previous records linked to similar alleged scams in São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Minas Gerais, Rio Grande do Sul and Goiás.

Campo Grande News also reported that Amanda had allegedly deceived child protection services in Mato Grosso do Sul in 2023 by presenting herself as a 13-year-old girl under another name.

In that case, she reportedly claimed she had no documents and needed help.

Authorities later became suspicious after discovering reports of similar behaviour elsewhere.

Police are now looking at whether the Joinville case forms part of a broader pattern.

Police Say She Confessed During Questioning

After the family contacted police, officers arrested the woman at the home where she had been living.

Santa Catarina Civil Police said she confessed during formal questioning.

She was then taken to the Presídio Regional de Joinville and remained at the disposal of the courts.

Brazilian media have reported that a mental health evaluation has been requested as part of the legal process.

That assessment could become important as the case moves forward, especially if the court has to consider her mental state and criminal responsibility.

The Case Has Shocked Brazil

The story has attracted widespread attention because of how unusual the allegations are.

A grown woman allegedly managed to convince a family, a church community and people around her that she was a frightened child in need of help.

But beyond the strange details, the case also raises serious questions about trust, vulnerability and child protection.

If the allegations are proven, the woman did not simply use a false name. She allegedly built an entire identity around trauma and fear, then used that identity to gain care and protection from people who believed they were helping a child.

That is what makes the case so disturbing.

The family at the centre of the story appeared to act out of compassion. They believed they had welcomed a vulnerable girl into their home.

Instead, police say they had been deceived for 14 months.

The case remains under investigation.
